Retailers and other organizations that rely on credit card transactions now have a compelling reason to consider moving critical payment applications to the cloud.

Verizon Computing as a Service, or CaaS, the company’s cloud computing solution delivered from Verizon cloud centers in the U.S. and Europe, is the first cloud-based solution to successfully complete the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) audit for storing, processing and transmitting credit card information. This means that enterprises can be confident knowing their customers’ data is protected by the most rigorous industry-recognized payment-card security standard available globally.

To become PCI DSS-validated, Verizon CaaS underwent a comprehensive third-party examination of its policies, procedures and technical systems, as well as an on-site assessment and systemwide vulnerability scan.

The PCI DSS, developed by the founding payment brands of the PCI Security Standards Council, helps facilitate the broad adoption of consistent data security measures globally. Intended to help organizations proactively protect customer account data, the PCI DSS is a multifaceted security standard that includes requirements for security management, policies, procedures, network architecture, software design and other critical protective measures.

“Compliance with PCI DSS sets Verizon apart from other players in this space,” said Joseph S. Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today issued a statement in response to the Verizon-Google Legislative Framework Proposal. The following statement can be attributed to John M. Ryan, assistant chief legal officer and head of Regulatory Affairs for Level 3 Communications:

“We are encouraged that two companies with diverse business interests in the broadband Internet have been able to come to agreement on an issue as controversial as network neutrality. Like both companies, Level 3 believes that the government has a role to play in assuring an open, dynamic, improving and ubiquitous broadband Internet for U.S. citizens. We share their view that government must preserve innovation, advance policies that encourage accelerated investment in broadband infrastructure, and protect competition within all portions of the Internet market.

’”While there is much to praise in the Verizon-Google statement, there are also areas that require more attention. Allowing last-mile access network owners to create a “paid priority” data service raises a number of concerns, especially since most consumers have a choice of only two wired broadband Internet suppliers, and since contention for limited capacity seems inevitable because consumers’ demand for broadband is greater than the existing networks’ capacity.

”While we have concerns about some aspects of the proposal, we are encouraged by the progress made by Verizon and Google, and look forward to working with the industry and with the government to advance policies that encourage innovation, investment and competition within the broadband Internet market.”

Courts grappling with jammed dockets and prisons struggling to handle inmate health care issues can now put the power of video collaboration to work, with a new, tailored set of technology solutions and professional consulting services from Verizon Business.

Through these new services, Verizon Business will help courts and prison health care systems assess collaboration readiness as well as design, implement and support a broad range of Web and audio conferencing services, and video capabilities from desktop Web cams to high-definition and immersive video. The conferencing services and video capabilities can help enable courts and prison health care systems to operate more efficiently and effectively.

The technology and consulting services  are:

• Verizon Telejustice Collaboration Solutions – Provides video collaboration tools for federal, state and local judicial agencies to help facilitate the judicial process – from arraignment to parole hearings. Judges can use video conferencing for warrant, arraignment and other hearings, eliminating the expense and potential security issues involved in transporting defendants to court. Participants can remotely share court documents, diagrams and photographs to support proceedings.
• Verizon Telehealth Collaboration for Prisons – Enables prisons to expand inmate access to care while mitigating the need to transport prisoners to medical facilities – which can be costly and pose a danger to correctional personnel, medical professionals and the public. With an aging prison population, institutions – particularly those in rural areas — can enhance the delivery of primary care services, as well as expand access to numerous specialties including neurology, cardiology, radiology and pathology. Physicians can meet with inmates via video and use remote monitoring devices for near-real time access to patient medical information, helping improve access to health care professionals and speed diagnosis. Psychiatric care can be provided via video conference or immersive video.

“The United States federal and state court systems and prisons are bursting at the seams,” said Troy Cromwell, group president for global strategic services with Verizon Business. “Yet, warrants still must be issued, arraignments must be held and prisoners must be cared for. In the face of these challenges, the criminal justice system is increasingly tapping into the power of IT to make the wheels of government turn more effectively.”

Verizon Business is demonstrating the two new services at the American Correctional Association conference July 30-August 4 in Chicago and at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials conference July 31-August 4 in Houston.

Both services are available immediately under various state contracts, as well as an IT solution under the U.S. General Services Administration’s Networx, Washington Interagency Telecommunications System (WITS 3) and Connections contracts and the Alliant Governmentwide Acquisition Contract (GWAC) contract.

Verizon Unveils ‘Cloud’ Solution to Facilitate Sharing of Patient Information Among Health Care Providers

One of the biggest obstacles to sharing patient information electronically is that health care systems and providers use a wide range of incompatible IT platforms and software to create and store data in various formats.  A new service – the Verizon Health Information Exchange – will soon be available via the “cloud” to address this challenge.

The Verizon Health Information Exchange, one of the first services of its kind in the U.S., will consolidate clinical patient data from providers and translate it into a standardized format that can be securely accessed over the Web.  Participating exchange providers across communities, states and regions will be able to request patient data via a secure online portal, regardless of the IT systems and specific protocols the providers use.  This will enable providers to obtain a more complete view of a patient’s health history, no matter where the data is stored.

Having more information at their fingertips will help providers reduce medical errors and duplicative testing, control administrative costs and, ultimately, enhance patient safety and treatment outcomes. With monthly charges based on a provider’s patient-record volume, the service is economical because subscribers pay for what they use.

“By breaking down the digital silos within the U.S. health care delivery system, the Verizon Health Information Exchange will address many of the interoperability barriers that prevent sharing of clinical data between physicians, clinics, hospitals and payers,” said Kannan Sreedhar, vice president and global managing director, Verizon Connected Health Care Solutions.  “Providing secure access to patient data will enable health care organizations to make a quantum leap forward in the deployment of IT to meet critical business and patient-care issues.”

Adoption of health information exchanges is expected to grow as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 .  As of March, 56 federal grants totaling $548 million have been awarded to states to facilitate and expand the secure electronic movement and use of health information among organizations, using nationally recognized standards.

Strong Security, Comprehensive Service
Because the Verizon Health Information Exchange will be delivered via Verizon’s cloud computing platform, health care organizations will be able to use their current IT systems, processes and workflows, without large additional capital expenditures.  The service will be ideal for large and small health care providers.

The Verizon Health Information Exchange will use strong identity access management controls to provide security for sensitive patient information.  Only authorized users will have access to patient clinical data.

To build out the solution, Verizon will leverage the capabilities of several key technology and service providers – MEDfx, MedVirginia and Oracle – to deliver key features of the service including: clinical dashboard , record locator service, cross-enterprise patient index and secure clinical messaging.

“The ability to dynamically scale technical resources and pay for those used are key benefits of health information exchange platforms hosted in the cloud,” said Lynne A. Dunbrack, program director, IDC Health Insights.  “Cloud-based platforms will appeal to small to mid-sized organizations looking to shift technology investment from capex to opex and to large regional or statewide initiatives that need to establish connectivity with myriad stakeholders with divergent needs and interoperability requirements.”

MedVirginia to Adopt Verizon Health Information Exchange
Among the enterprise clients planning to adopt Verizon’s new platform is MedVirginia, a long-time health care pioneer serving central Virginia.  Formed in 2000 by a consortium of Virginia health care providers, the Richmond-based organization has long focused on initiatives to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of health care through IT innovations, including the 2006 launch of MedVirginia Solution®, a community-based health information exchange.

“Based on our track record of success, MedVirginia projects continued growth in the expanding marketplace for health IT,” said Michael Matthews, chief executive officer of MedVirginia and chairman of the NHIN Compatibility Committee administered by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.  “Our current and future needs require enhanced functionality, flexibility, performance and scalability, and the cloud-based Verizon Health Information Exchange meets those requirements.”

Health Information Exchange Will Meet Stringent Federal Standards
Verizon Health Information Exchange will also meet stringent federal standards for privacy, including provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.  In addition, the platform will comply with the requirements of the Nationwide Health Information Network, a collection of standards, protocols, legal agreements, specifications and services overseen by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to support the secure exchange of health information over the Internet.

Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions
The Verizon Health Information Exchange is the latest in a series of initiatives that the company has implemented to help accelerate the use of technology in health care.  For example, in March, Verizon Business launched the Verizon Medical Data Exchange and last November, the company introduced Verizon Telehealth Collaboration Services.

Continuing to lead the industry in 100G technology, Verizon has completed a field trial carrying 100 gigabit-per-second Ethernet traffic on a metropolitan Ethernet infrastructure. Using Alcatel-Lucent equipment deployed in Verizon’s Switched Ethernet Services network, the trial successfully transmitted data over 12.7 kilometers (7.9 miles) of field fiber in the company’s Dallas area network.

Verizon SES is a next-generation switched Ethernet service enabling customers to easily interconnect their locations within a metrowide network as well as access private and public wide area networks (WANs) using optical fiber-based access. Ethernet service is well-suited for numerous customer applications, based on its ability to provide point-to-point and multipoint connectivity options combined with multiple classes of service and increments of bandwidths.

Demand for SES is increasing, driven by trends such as wireless carriers using Ethernet backhaul to stay ahead of the growing demand for high-bandwidth wireless services. Verizon currently provides links for thousands of cell sites and mobile switching offices from its advanced fiber-optic network, using Ethernet-based technology.

“With this 100G Ethernet trial, Verizon is preparing for the future and the need to meet our customers’ bandwidth needs in the metro Ethernet space,” said Jean McManus, executive director of technology for Verizon. “The ‘network of tomorrow’ will include building blocks such as 100G Ethernet that allow us to scale our switched Ethernet core as access speeds and customer demands increase.”

The trial, which ran from June 14 – 18, used existing Alcatel-Lucent 7450 switching equipment with new plug-in cards to place native 100GE traffic on a single fiber, creating the high-speed links.

“Our goal is to show 100GE can be carried on a metro network and do it with current equipment that avoids major changes – and the associated costs – to the existing network infrastructure,” said McManus.

Alcatel-Lucent’s 7450 ESS nodes used 100 GE service interfaces with 100GBASE-LR10 optics, which provide low-cost, high-bandwidth transport over distances of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Verizon is at the forefront of accelerating the availability and adoption of 100GE technology.

“A seamless transition to 100GE leveraging existing Alcatel-Lucent IP Routing platforms enables Verizon to expand its innovative Ethernet service offerings in a timely and efficient manner,” said Robert Vrij, president of the Americas region at Alcatel-Lucent. “Services are the driver of revenues and the rationale for investment in the network. Our platforms deliver speed without compromising services, leveraging our breakthrough 100G silicon innovation and long-standing relationships with leading service providers such as Verizon.”

Alcatel-Lucent offers the industry’s first 100GE interfaces that deliver the full range of routed and switched services for residential, business and mobile services. Deployed in networks serving metropolitan areas — at the service edge or in the core of the network — Alcatel-Lucent’s modules extend the applicability of 100GE far beyond core transport. Combined with 100G optical transport technology, Alcatel-Lucent offers exceptional end-to-end scalability, performance and compatibility to help support bandwidth scaling and control costs — key tenets of Alcatel-Lucent’s High Leverage Network (HLN) architecture.

Verizon’s SES network supports Ethernet LAN (E-LAN) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) metro services. E-LAN is a multipoint-to-multipoint bridging service designed for any-to-any connectivity between dedicated ports. EVPL is an all-fiber optic network service that connects subscriber locations at native LAN speeds using point-to-point Ethernet virtual connections.

This latest trial follows external link Verizon’s deployment of the first live 100G commercial system on its European optical core network between Paris and Frankfurt as well as a series of successful 100G technology trials the company has previously completed.

In November 2007 external link Verizon and Alcatel-Lucent successfully completed the industry’s first field test of 100G optical transmission on a live network route between Tampa, Fla., and Miami. In October 2008, external link Verizon and Nortel proved 100G transmission could perform with better tolerance for signal distortion than typically found in today’s standard 10G wavelength. In September 2008, external link Verizon and Nokia Siemens Networks announced they had successfully transmitted data at 100G on a single wavelength for more than 1,040 kilometers, setting a new distance record over deployed fiber and demonstrating better performance than conventional transmission.

As part of its continuing effort to better understand security breaches and how they can be prevented, Verizon is joining forces with the United States Secret Service on this year’s Data Breach Investigations Report.

The 2010 DBIR, slated to be issued this summer, will feature aggregated findings from Verizon’s own caseload as well as hundreds of computer crime cases investigated by the Secret Service, in a first-of-its-kind collaboration.

By including Secret Service data, Verizon security researchers expect to gain a unique perspective on data breaches, including what happens after a breach to identify suspects, make arrests, and extradite foreign nationals, and how cybercriminals are prosecuted, among other new findings.

“Verizon is significantly broadening the scope of the 2010 DBIR to gain new insight into how data breaches occur, especially in the consumer sector,” said Peter Tippett, vice president of technology and innovation for Verizon Business. “With a greatly expanded dataset, this year’s report will give a more accurate picture of data breaches around the globe while delving into new areas in an effort to better arm organizations worldwide in the fight against cybercrime.”

Verizon Enterprise Risk and Incident-Sharing Framework at Work
In cooperation with Verizon, the Secret Service is using the Verizon Incident Sharing, or VERIS, framework — a not-for-profit, open-source structure to describe security incidents — to classify and analyze its 2009 breaches. Earlier this year, Verizon began publicly sharing this research framework, which the company uses to collect and analyze security-incident data for its landmark data breach investigations reports.

The VERIS framework will enable Verizon security researchers to compare the Secret Service’s caseload data with Verizon’s historical dataset to gain a better understanding of how security breaches occur and what can be done to better manage risk.

“Combating computer-related crimes targeting the U.S. financial infrastructure is a top Secret Service priority,” said Secret Service Assistant Director for Investigations Michael Merritt. “We are proud to partner with our colleagues in the private sector, academia and at all levels of government to better identify and prevent these insidious attacks.”

Verizon Business has successfully completed the annual SAS 70 Type II examinations of its global data centers, which support the company’s colocation, managed hosting and application management services. Many of these offerings underpin Verizon’s new “everything-as-a-service,” or EaaS, cloud-based delivery model.

SAS 70, a widely recognized auditing standard performed by a third-party accounting firm, is conducted in compliance with the standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for examining specific areas such as: organizational structure, governance and administration; access to facilities; logical access to systems; network services; operational processes and environmental safeguards; and system availability and performance. These examinations demonstrate that Verizon Business has the controls and processes in place to manage and monitor its data centers, as well as the critical applications and infrastructure of its enterprise clients.

“Today, clients around the globe rely on Verizon Business for advanced IT and hosting services,” said Joseph S. SAS 70 Type II audits were recently completed for the following Verizon global data centers:

• Verizon Colocation Premium Data Centers – Fifteen of Verizon’s premium Internet data centers in North America – including facilities in California, Georgia, New Jersey and Texas – completed successful audits for the fifth consecutive year. A facility in Irving, Texas, passed its examination for the second year. Also successfully audited were four premium data centers in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Singapore and Sydney; four centers in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London; and two in Canada.
• Verizon Remote IP Application Management Centers – For the fifth consecutive year, Verizon remote operations centers in San Francisco and London successfully completed an annual examination. In addition, new facilities in the U.S. (California and Texas), Germany and India were successfully audited for the first time.
• Verizon IP Application Hosting Centers – This marks the ninth consecutive year for successful examination of Verizon’s U.S.- and U.K.-based managed hosting centers, called Smart Centers. It also marks the second year for the company’s Smart Centers in Japan and Germany.

In addition, last month Verizon announced that it had successfully completed the first annual SAS 70 Type II examination of controls for its cloud computing data centers.

With businesses looking more closely than ever at the economics of cloud computing, Verizon and IBM have expanded their relationship to deliver Managed Data Vault – a new private cloud service that provides secure, quick and reliable daily backups, and fast recovery of enterprise information.

Available from both companies, the new solution is designed to automatically transfer data from a client location to a specially designed off-site data center via Verizon’s secure high-speed private network. With Managed Data Vault, businesses can realize off-site data protection at onsite speeds while taking advantage of usage-based utility to meet data growth without limits.

Many companies today still transport their backup tapes by truck to an off-site location – a process that has proven to be a slow and unreliable approach to archiving – adding security concerns, time, complexity and cost to the data protection process.

Small- and medium-sized business (SMB) customers now can get Verizon high-performance Internet access coupled with automatic wireless broadband backup to help ensure they are always available to their customers. The new solution – Verizon Internet Dedicated Access with Mobile Broadband – automatically routes business traffic to the Verizon Wireless 3G EV-DO broadband wireless network in the event of a service disruption.

The new solution, which is immediately available nationwide, is ideal for customers with highly distributed locations who primarily use IDA for outbound critical traffic, web research or point-of-sale transactions.

“This new integrated solution gives small- and medium–sized business customers robust and reliable Internet access along with the peace of mind that comes with having a wireless backup plan in place,” said Carrie Gray, Verizon Business executive director of SMB solutions marketing. “Our white glove managed installation approach enables our customers to concentrate on doing business while leaving the technical complexities to us.”

Global Network Capabilities Drive Leading Performance
Strategic network investments in 2009 provided additional reliability, resiliency and performance for Verizon’s business, government and wholesale customers. Among the highlights:

• With the launch of its multiyear packet optical transport platform strategy, Verizon is creating a single, higher-capacity global platform that combines optical transport with advanced packet-switching technology. This optical switching gear can handle both traditional, time-division multiplexing transmissions as well as packet traffic to create a single, high-capacity intelligent network. Verizon has plans to integrate packet capabilities into its ultra-long-haul (ULH) network by early 2011.
• In December, Verizon became the first communications carrier to successfully deploy a commercial 100G (gigabits per second) ultra-long-haul optical system for live traffic on the company’s European optical core network between Paris and Frankfurt. The accomplishment marked the first time for deployment of ultra-long-haul 100G using a single channel on a production network.
• With more than 5,200 additional miles added in 2009, Verizon continued to extend its ultra-long-haul network. Regions added this year include France and central regions of the U.K. as well as new routes in the existing ULH network in the U.S. ULH technology streamlines the network infrastructure and extends transmission without regeneration, eliminating thousands of pieces of equipment and physical connections among network elements, resulting in a more manageable and reliable network. ULH supports both 40G and 100G capacity, which pave the way for high-bandwidth data applications as customers push more high-bandwidth-intensive applications such as immersive video and bandwidth on demand.
• In 2009 Verizon extended its optical-mesh architecture into the Middle East. With recent mesh deployments in Mumbai and Chennai, India; Marseille, France; and Singapore, Verizon can seamlessly reroute traffic to alternate paths in the event of multiple breaks in undersea or land cables. With a stake in more than 80 submarine cable systems worldwide, Verizon was the first service provider to deploy undersea mesh technology – providing multiple diverse paths for voice and data traffic reliability – to connect major submarine cable systems traversing the Atlantic Ocean, with seven-way diversity. Verizon also deployed seven-way diversity on its Pacific Ocean submarine cable networks, enabling the company to more quickly reroute traffic in more directions to meet the needs of its customers worldwide.
• Verizon continued to extend the benefits of converged packet architecture (CPA) by adding 16 sites in 2009. CPA converges all services, whether IP, data or voice, onto one common network-access interface, allowing customers to more easily and efficiently make network adaptations. CPA supports a full range of legacy and advanced services such as IP, Private IP, Ethernet, private line data, voice traffic, Ethernet Virtual Private Line and Virtual Private LAN Service, now available in Europe, Asia Pacific and North America.

Domestic Investment Supports Service Innovation
At the five-year mark and currently passing 14.5 million homes in 16 states, Verizon’s unique fiber-to-the-premises network continues to position the company as the hub for managing every phase of its customers’ digital lives. Highlights include:

• In December, Verizon successfully field-tested fiber optic transmission over its FiOS network at 10G, or four times the currently deployed maximum capacity data stream. The XG-PON trial paves the way for simple expansion of the fiber network to meet future capacity challenges created by new services like 3-D TV.

• Verizon’s fiber-to-the-home network is poised to reach a targeted 15 million premises by year end. Verizon had 3.3 million FiOS Internet and 2.7 million FiOS TV customers by the end of the third quarter. Now offering data speeds up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 20 Mbps upstream, the network as configured could handle up to 400 Mbps service.

• Verizon FiOS TV now delivers up to 138 HD video channels, up by more than a third during 2009, and has added more than 50 total channels since a year ago. The Widget Bazaar, introduced in July, offers the most dynamic set of on-screen TV widgets in the marketplace.
• The Verizon global wholesale team continues broad deployment of fiber-to-the-cell fiber backhaul service in support of Verizon Wireless and other wireless companies. Fiber backhaul is seen as key to supporting the massive bandwidth requirements of expanding 3G and developing 4G wireless data networks nationwide.
• With a total of 9.2 million High Speed Internet (HSI) and FiOS Internet customers through September, Verizon continues to support consumers with its reliable HSI DSL-based broadband service. The company added 161,000 new HSI lines in 2009 and made available its 7.1 megabit-per-second service to 450,000 additional customers.

The Nation’s Largest and Most Reliable Wireless 3G Network
Verizon Wireless has the largest and most reliable wireless 3G network coverage area in the U.S., providing customers in more locations than any other wireless carrier with the ability to browse the Web faster for quick page-loading times, quick downloads for music and 3D games, streaming video, e-mails with attachments, video conferencing with contacts, and rapidly sharing files.

• In January, Verizon Wireless completed its acquisition of Alltel, expanding the company’s network coverage to approximately 290 million people, nearly the entire U.S. population. Since then, Verizon Wireless has upgraded and integrated Alltel’s 3G data network to the latest revision of wireless broadband technology to enable faster delivery of data applications, including e-mail and browsing the Internet.
• Verizon Wireless took steps toward the rollout of the nation’s first 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network. Verizon Wireless’ aggressive 4G LTE network build includes plans to launch in 25 to 30 markets in 2010 and cover virtually all its current nationwide 3G footprint with the next-generation network by the end of 2013.

As the primary standard used to evaluate testing and calibration laboratories, ISO/IEC 17025 assesses a laboratory’s management and technical capabilities, including the operational effectiveness of its quality-management system and its policies, objectives and processes. The standard also evaluates staff competence and testing methodologies.

“ISO/IEC 17025 enhances the credibility of a laboratory by providing verification of quality-management systems and technical competence,” said Keith Greenaway, vice president at ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board / ACLASS, which provides laboratory accreditation for the standard. “By achieving this accreditation, ICSA Labs demonstrated that it maintains a quality-management system and is technically competent and able to produce valid and internationally accepted test results. This is the first commercial security product testing lab that we have accredited – a major accomplishment for ICSA Labs.”

To earn ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, a laboratory must also comply with the strict quality-management system requirements contained in ISO 9001. ICSA Labs earned ISO/IEC 9001 certification in 2005.

The ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is subject to reaccreditation every two years.

ICSA Labs, which for 20 years has produced reliable, accurate and objective test results, also as part of the ACLASS accreditation became the first laboratory recognized under the new NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) USGv6 Testing Program. The program helps to verify the security, conformance and interoperability of IPv6 products used by the U.S. federal government.

Where in the world is Santa Claus? That’s a question millions of children ask on Christmas Eve.

On the big night, the answer will be only a toll-free call away. Verizon Business again is teaming with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to provide a special free hotline for children and their parents to speak with a volunteer at the famed military center.

Starting Dec. 24 at 2 a.m. Mountain time through 3 a.m. Mountain time on Dec. 25, children across the U.S. and Canada can call 1-877-HI-NORAD to determine Santa’s exact location on Christmas Eve. (Callers outside North America can reach the NORAD Tracks Santa hotline by dialing the local Colorado Springs number at 719-556-5211 using the appropriate country code. International charges can apply.)

More than 1,200 volunteers, military personnel from Colorado Springs, their families and friends, and NORAD Tracks Santa corporate sponsor team members – including members from Verizon Business — will be continuously manning the NORAD Santa tracking hotline to ensure children know the whereabouts of Santa on Christmas Eve. In 2008, nearly 74,000 calls were answered at the NORAD Tracks Santa Operations Center at Peterson Air Force Base.

“For years, NORAD and Verizon have worked together to bring children of all ages a unique experience during the holiday season — live tracking of Santa along his yuletide journey,” said Joyce Frankovis, the program project lead from NORAD. “While we’ve added many online bells and whistles since its inception, the Santa hotline is at the heart of our program, enabling children to talk to a live operator to find out Santa’s whereabouts.”

Children, their parents and the young-at-heart also can visit the NORAD Tracks Santa Web site (www.noradsanta.org), which provides real-time information on Santa’s exact location. The information is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese — complete with radar maps and streaming SantaCam video images documenting Santa’s global journey.

This year, Santa also can be tracked through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and TroopTube.tv.

A Tradition for Half a Century
NORAD, the binational U.S. and Canadian military organization responsible for the aerospace defense of both countries, has tracked Santa around the globe on Christmas Eve for more than 50 years. The tradition started by accident in 1955 after a local newspaper misprint prompted children to call the Continental Air Defense Command (NORAD’s predecessor) instead of a special Santa hotline phone number.

The latest in the Data Breach Investigations Report series by Verizon Business security experts provides enterprises with an unprecedented look at the 15 most common security attacks and how they typically unfold.

In the “2009 Supplemental Data Breach Investigations Report: An Anatomy of a Data Breach,” Verizon Business security experts tap the company’s detailed investigative records to identify, rank and profile the most common attacks. For each type of attack, the report provides real-world scenarios, the warning signs, how the attack is orchestrated, how attackers got in, what information they took, what assets the attackers targeted, what industries are commonly affected, and what countermeasures are effective. In total, the report details nearly 150 ways to detect and combat security threats.

This latest installment in Verizon’s data breach study series is based on the “2009 Verizon Business Data Breach Investigations Report,” issued in April. That landmark study analyzed more than 90 forensic investigations involving 285 million compromised records.

“This supplemental report seeks to address the thousands of inquiries we’ve received from companies around the world wanting a more detailed explanation of attacks, as well as requests for additional recommendations for deterring, preventing and detecting breaches,” said Dr. Peter Tippett, vice president of technology and innovation, Verizon Business. “This follow-up analysis is aimed at helping organizations better safeguard their organizations by understanding the anatomy of a data breach and how cybercriminals work.”

Top 15 Most Common Security Attacks The 2009 Verizon Business Supplemental Data Breach Report identified and ranked by frequency the following top 15 types of attacks:

1. Keylogging and spyware: Malware specifically designed to covertly collect, monitor and log the actions of a system user.
2. Backdoor or command/control: Tools that provide remote access to or control of infected systems, or both, and are designed to run covertly.
3. SQL injection: An attack technique used to exploit how Web pages communicate with back-end databases.
4. Abuse of system access/privileges: Deliberate and malicious abuse of resources, access or privileges granted to an individual by an organization.
5. Unauthorized access via default credentials: Instances in which an attacker gains access to a system or device protected by standard preset (widely known) usernames and passwords.
6. Violation of acceptable use and other policies: Accidental or purposeful disregard of acceptable use policies.
7. Unauthorized access via weak or misconfigured access control lists (ACLs): When ACLs are weak or misconfigured, attackers can access resources and perform actions not intended by the victim.
8. Packet Sniffer: Monitors and captures data traversing a network.
9. Unauthorized access via stolen credentials: Instances in which an attacker gains access to a protected system or device using valid but stolen credentials.
10. Pretexting or social engineering: A social engineering technique in which the attacker invents a scenario to persuade, manipulate, or trick the target into performing an action or divulging information.
11. Authentication bypass: Circumvention of normal authentication mechanisms to gain unauthorized access to a system
12. Physical theft of asset: Physically stealing an asset.
13. Brute-force attack: An automated process of iterating through possible username/password combinations until one is successful.
14. RAM scraper: A fairly new form of malware designed to capture data from volatile memory (RAM) within a system.
15. Phishing (and endless “ishing” variations): A social engineering technique in which an attacker uses fraudulent electronic communications (usually e-mail) to lure the recipient into divulging information.

In addition to the extensive threat catalogue, the supplemental report includes an appendix that compares Verizon’s caseload with DataLossDB, a public database of reported incidents worldwide.

Forrester Research has named Verizon Business a leader in delivering global managed multiprotocol switching label services in the independent analyst firm’s October 2009 report, “The Forrester WAVE™: Managed Global MPLS Services, Q4 2009.”1

Forrester analyzed the managed global MPLS services market by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of providers against an extensive set of 54 criteria grouped into three categories: current offerings, strategy and market presence.

Specifically, the report notes, “Verizon also received a very high score for its overall strategy … and received top marks for its very strong and credible value proposition for MNCs looking for managed multiregional/ global MPLS solutions.” Further, the report cited the strength of the company’s portfolio and features: “Verizon has a strong current offering for managed global MPLS services, including the broadest CoS/QoS capabilities for prioritizing data/application traffic and the widest choice of standard port bandwidth options in different geographic regions.”

In addition, the report found the company, “also articulated the strongest commitment to invest in enhancing its global IP network and its MPLS services portfolio for 2009 and 2010.”

Verizon Business’ global MPLS-based networking solutions include Private IP, the company’s layer 3 virtual private network, and Ethernet Virtual Private Line and Virtual Private LAN Service, its layer 2 virtual private networking services.

Verizon has been positioned by Gartner Inc. in the Leaders Quadrant of the analyst firm’s newly released report, “Magic Quadrant for U.S. Telecommunications Service Providers.”

Gartner examined 12 U.S.-based telecommunications service providers in its report. In recognition of the growing trend by business customers to purchase wireline and wireless voice and data services from a single provider, Gartner this year has combined its wireless service provider Magic Quadrant with its network service provider Magic Quadrant.

“Our leading IP and wireless networks plus our ability to deliver integrated solutions continue to set us apart,” said Fran Shammo, president of Verizon Business. “In addition to our network strengths and extensive portfolio, we work tirelessly to offer our customers a seamless wireline-wireless experience, including our unified global Verizon Enterprise Center portal.”

Synterra, a national telecommunications service provider of the Russian Federation, and U.S.-based Verizon Business  have signed a master services agreement that will provide significant benefits to customers of both companies. The signing occurred in Moscow on Wednesday (July 8th) during the week of the U.S.-Russian Presidential Summit.

The joint agreement will allow Synterra customers in Russia to expand their geographic presence by accessing the Verizon Business advanced global communications network, which spans six continents. Verizon Business also will be able to leverage the Synterra network and send customer traffic to major cities throughout Russia.
Independent telecommunications system operators in Russia will send their traffic to the Synterra data center in Moscow, where the traffic will be transferred to the Verizon Business global network. The network will provide Synterra customers with access to more than 150 counties, 2,700 cities and 200 data centers located around the world, as well as to Verizon Business’ voice, data, video and IP services.

Verizon Business also will use Synterra’s Moscow data center to deliver customer traffic directly to the Synterra network.
“Signing of this agreement between one of the biggest communications companies in the world, Verizon Business, and the Russian national communications service provider Synterra is an important step on the way to innovative cooperation between our countries and the realization of arrangements of the world summit concerning the development of the information society,” said Vitaly Slisen, general director of Synterra.

In 1996, a Verizon Business predecessor company began offering multinational customers communications services to Russia. One of the most recent offerings is the fast-growing Private IP service. The new agreement with Synterra will expand the reach and service offerings for Verizon Business enterprise customers throughout Russia.

“Verizon Business is focused on providing communications solutions for our enterprise, government and wholesale customers around the world,” said Blair Crump, Verizon Business group president of worldwide sales. “Our expansive global network infrastructure gives our Verizon Business customers a firm foundation on which to build their future success. With this new agreement, Synterra customers also will have the opportunity to use our advanced global network for their communications needs, while our Verizon Business customers can expand into additional Russian cities.”

During the signing ceremony in Moscow, Detlef Eppig, director of Verizon Business operations and technology for Central and Eastern Europe, said: “The Russian market is a growing region for international business. We have many multinational customers with company locations in Russia and look forward to offering them more network services, connections to more cities and diversity for their mission-critical communications needs. Our agreement with Synterra gives us the opportunity to strengthen our position in Russia.”
