Alcatel-Lucent Testing LTE Serving Gateway

Sunnyvale, Calif. � May 17, 2011 � A live demonstration this week at TIA 2011 in Dallas, Texas will showcase how the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) Mobile Gateway performs under the most demanding conditions in a 4G/LTE environment while maintaining the highest Quality of Service (QoS), even for bandwidth intensive video applications. Using Landslide on Spirent TestCenter, Alcatel-Lucent will show how the 7750 SR Mobile Gateway supports millions of active mobile broadband subscribers, each with multiple data connections. Landslide on Spirent TestCenter is the industry�s only test platform that combines real world subscriber behavior and mobile broadband traffic to evaluate wireless core packet network performance.

The demonstration features high scalability and performance with sustained aggregate throughput in excess of 180 Gbps, which is the equivalent of more than 250,000 simultaneous and individual iPad/iPhone quality Netflix streams. Even in this demanding network scenario, Alcatel-Lucent reaches the highest publicly-demonstrated throughput achieved to date.

�These tests show the 7750 Service Router�s ability to handle speed, high-throughput and connectivity challenges under an assortment of real-world cases.� said Kevin Macaluso, vice president and general manager of the Service Router product group within Alcatel-Lucent. �This is critical in allowing our service provider customers to understand that our solution will help to not only address their needs today, but also as video applications become even more pervasive. LTE and other 4G technologies require a powerful platform for testing and Spirent�s Landslide was the principal tool we used in the lab that helped us to validate the performance of our router in the role of a mobile gateway.�

This public demonstration will showcase the highest subscriber traffic aggregate speeds while supporting 1.5 million active mobile devices and three million default and dedicated data connections. It will use two Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SRs configured as an LTE Serving gateway (SGW) and a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway, and will emphasize the way this solution performs under the most demanding real world conditions.

The Landslide on Spirent TestCenter solution provides a comprehensive end-to-end offering that emulates millions of mobile data subscribers, simultaneously accessing the wireless network using various access models. It tests all of the key wireless core elements, and combines control plane and data plane simulation. This provides real-world emulation of millions of mobile nodes in various stages of activation, deactivation, and hand-off between cells, all while transmitting and receiving real-world application data over an AnyG mobile network.

Alcatel-Lucent continues its momentum into 2011 with a strong start to the year: 15% top line year-over-year growth in Q1�11 & positive adjusted operating profit

Ben Verwaayen, CEO, commented:�We have started this year the way we ended the last, increasing growth, profit and global strength, and to do so in the first quarter is particularly pleasing.�

�A favourable geographic and product mix impacted positively our gross margin while actions on fixed costs have been taken which will drive further efficiency gains during the course of the year. We improved our free cash flow by more than Euro 200 million compared to the year ago quarter.

Market momentum remains robust, driven by demand for more capacity and service delivery capabilities in many geographies. While we are facing some difficulties with our supply chain, we believe those challenges will have a limited impact on our business performance thanks to rapid actions taken. With a strong start to the year, we are reaffirming our full-year outlook to grow faster than our addressable market with an adjusted operating margin above 5% of our 2011 sales.�

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

First quarter revenue increased 15.2% year-over-year and decreased 23.1% sequentially to Euro 3.740 billion. At constant currency exchange rates and perimeter, revenue increased 13.9% year-over-year and decreased 21.6% sequentially. Networks saw a strong year-over-year increase in revenue with all divisions growing.IP revenues maintained a very strong pace of growth with an increase of more than 20% as did wireless with an increase close to 34% driven by 3G defined as the sum of WCDMA & CDMA EV-DO and 4G technologies.The optics division posted sales growth both in submarine and terrestrial transmission and wireline benefited from good growth in GPON and IPDSLAM. Applications revenues posted a year-over-year high single digit increase with Networks applications growing at a double digit rate and Enterprise applications increasing close to 6%.Services revenues grew at a low single digit rate with strong double digit growth for Network & System integration.From a geographic standpoint, growth in North America accelerated again this quarter at 40% year-over-year, Rest of World grew at a low double digit rate driven by Brazil and Mexico. Asia Pacific grew slightly thanks to China, somewhat compensated by lower sales in the rest of the region and Europe declined 1% year-over-year with Eastern Europe and Western Europe declining at roughly the same pace.

Adjusted² operating¹ income of Euro 13 million or 0.3% of revenue. Gross margin came in at 36.2% of revenue for the quarter, compared to 32.6% in the year ago quarter and 36.2% in the fourth quarter 2010. The year-over-year increase in gross margin was driven by a very good geographical and product mix. The sequential stability in the gross margin results from a decrease in volumes compensated by a better geographical & product mix. Operating expenses increased 7.0% year-over-year on a reported basis and adjusted for constant currency, the increase is 5.7% year-over-year primarily driven by an increase in R&D spending related to new product development in IP and wireless and an increase in SG&A spending related to seasonal accruals activity. On a sequential basis, operating expenses decreased by 1.8% as reported and by 1.5% at constant currency reflecting a decrease in R&D.

Reported net loss (group share) of Euro (10) million or Euro (0.00) per share. This includes a one-time gain of Euro 69 million pre-tax and after tax related to an amendment of the US management pension plan. Purchase Price Adjustments amounted to Euro (68) million pre-tax and to Euro (42) million after tax.

Net (debt)/cash of Euro 106 million, versus Euro 362 million as of December 31, 2010 (the value of the net debt for past quarters has been restated from previous reported figures to take into account the Mark-to-Market of foreign exchange derivatives on intergroup loans).The sequential decrease in net cash of Euro 256 million primarily reflects the positive operating cash flow of Euro 169 million partly offset with interests expenses of Euro (100) million, restructuring cash outlays of Euro (82) million, contribution to pensions and OPEB of Euro (46) million and capital expenditures of Euro (134) million. The positive operating cash flow results from the level of adjusted operating income and a decrease in operating working capital requirements of Euro 82 million.

Funded status of Pensions and OPEB of Euro 10 million at end of March, compared to Euro (516) million as of December 31, 2010. Excluding currency impact, the improvement of the funded status of Pensions & OPEB mainly results from an increase of the fair value of the plan assets for Euro 451 million and a positive impact of Euro 69 million from an amendment of the U.S management pension plan. Effective 1^st of April, an amendment of the management pension plan has been signed in February 2011 to include a lump sum option for the active employees who are eligible for service pensions. The accounting impact is a credit of around Euro 69 million in the P&L recorded in the first quarter 2011 which increases by the same amount the IFRS funded status at the end of March 2011.

Alcatel-Lucent OpenPlug Studio Toolkit License Now Free

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced two initiatives to fuel the growth of applications that work across platforms and devices.

Effective immediately, OpenPlug Studio (formerly OpenPlug ELIPS Studio) will now be available to application developers free of charge. OpenPlug Studio is a development toolkit that allows developers to efficiently create native applications for smart phones, tablets and other web-connected devices from a single code base using well-known web development technologies such as JavaScript, ActionScript and XML. Developers can download OpenPlug Studio at http://developer.openplug.com

The company also launched a Certified OpenPlug Solutions Provider Program focused on application development and developer training. Initial members include Exuvis, Nexworld and On3. They will teach developers how to use the OpenPlug tools, while also building mobile applications for businesses that run on any platform or device and leverage service providers� network-based APIs (application programming interfaces).

These new initiatives will make it easier for a new generation of applications to be developed and rolled out �at the speed of ideas� � a core commitment of Alcatel-Lucent in its support of the application developer community.

The tremendous growth in mobile applications is largely fueled by the consumer and enterprise adoption of smartphones and tablets. Industries such as transportation are looking to these devices to more efficiently mobilize their staffs and deliver an entirely new level of service. Media and entertainment industries are using the technology to extend the value of content subscriptions across as many platforms as possible � keeping paid content in play.

Alcatel-Lucent acquired OpenPlug in September 2010, one of several aggressive moves it has made to advance Alcatel-Lucent�s Application Enablement vision. Application Enablement combines the service provider�s trusted network capabilities with the speed and innovation of the Web to enable a new generation of richer services for consumers and business users. The OpenPlug tools are also incorporated into the company�s Open API Platform which enables service providers and enterprises to open up their networks and attract a community of application and content providers.

ALU Banned: Alcatel-Lucent Admitted also Paying Bribes for Contracts in Malaysia

Telekom Malaysia and mobile operator Axiata have barred Alcatel-Lucent from bidding for new tenders for a year after it admitted paying bribes for contracts.

Malaysian authorities in December began to probe accusations by US officials that Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent gave kickbacks to government officials in Latin America and Asia — including Malaysia — between December 2001 and June 2006.

The investigation came days after Alcatel-Lucent agreed to pay $137 million in fines and penalties to settle the charges as part of an agreement with US authorities. Transparency International Malaysia welcomed the the decisions but described the 12-month punishment as “mild” by international standards.

Alcatel-Lucent agreed in December to pay the huge fine to settle the charges following a deal with the US Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It had told the two US authorities that it made improper payments to obtain contracts with Celcom, a unit of Axiata. Axiata was previously known as TM International, a unit of Telekom Malaysia.

The Justice Department said Alcatel had violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act prior to its 2006 merger with US-based Lucent Technologies.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE:ALU ) has been selected by China Mobile to participate to the world�s largest 4G TD-LTE trial network deployment in China. This qualification follows successful completion of various interoperability tests which started from January 2010 as required by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information (MIIT) and China Mobile. Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent�s flagship company in China is one of the first suppliers to have successfully achieved this key milestone and will be deploying its end-to-end LTE solution for China Mobile�s large-scale 4G TD-LTE trial in the city of Shanghai.

Covering 6 major Chinese cities, namely Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen, and recently extended to Beijing, this large scale TD-LTE trial will help China Mobile to provide a wide range of high speed mobile broadband services to its subscribers, such as high definition video, 3D gaming, FTP transmission and high speed Internet. It will also enable new industries with LTE connectivity like automotive industry and multi-industry ecosystem development thanks to initiatives pioneered by Alcatel-Lucent through the ng Connect Program launched two years ago.

The tests were conducted in both 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz frequency bands for indoor and outdoor deployments and relied on Alcatel-Lucent�s industry-leading LTE expertise to provide an end-to-end integrated solution including LTE base stations (eNodeBs), the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). Alcatel-Lucent�s solution successfully passed interoperability tests with two major terminal suppliers.

New ways to dramatically increase the speed of traditional DSL-technology

By year-end 2010, A1 Telekom Austria plans to provide high-speed broadband to 40% of all Austrian households and commercial businesses through its nationwide GigaNet � which uses FTTC (Fiber-to-the-curb) and FTTEx (Fiber-to-the-exchange, also known as VDSL@CO) to connect Telekom Austria�s central office equipment with the �last-mile� copper network.

Together with Alcatel-Lucent, A1 Telekom Austria today therefore demonstrated in front of investors the possibilities of technologies such as VDSL Vectoring and the so-called �Phantom Mode�.

Broadband penetration in Austria will be increased quickly

The European Commission�s Digital Agenda envisions providing every European citizen with 30Mbps broadband by 2020. This will allow the simultaneous transmission of three high-definition TV channels, internet usage and voice telephony. To achieve this, an intelligent combination of several access technologies is needed.

�Complementing our fiber infrastructure and continuously increasing wireless capacities, we want to get the most out of our existing copper-based network,� said Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter, General Manager A1 Telekom Austria. �This is how we can provide our customers with the highest bandwidths in the shortest timeframe, especially in regions where fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) build-outs have not yet been planned.�

Vectoring prevents interference or �crosstalk� between copper lines. This requires enormous processor capacities in A1 Telekom Austria�s network. The result of Vectoring is a drastic increase in downstream capacities. Using VDSL Bonding, switching centres can supply constant speeds to larger areas. Going a step further, innovations such as DSL Phantom Mode use a virtual or �phantom� channel on top of two physical transmission lines to push the envelope on DSL capacity.

In the course of the demo, using a combination of Bonding, Vectoring and Phantom Mode, downstream speeds up to 390 Mbps at 400 meters were shown.

�Telecom service providers have invested a great deal in their copper infrastructure and for economic and environmental reasons it makes sense to continue to use this valuable asset as long as possible – even as they move traffic to fiber,� said Harald Himmer, Head of Alcatel-Lucent�s business in Austria. “As a leader in fixed broadband we are able to dramatically increase bandwidth rates with our innovative technologies. 100 Gigabit Ethernet trial with Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced today that True, Thailand�s leading telecommunications conglomerate, successfully conducted a field trial carrying 100 gigabit per second Ethernet (100GE) traffic, over �its existing IP/MPLS network, which is based on Alcatel-Lucent service routing technology.

The trial successfully demonstrated that Alcatel-Lucent�s 100GE interfaces support and sustain 100Gbps, while delivering wireless (3G and LTE) services, as well as residential broadband, subscriber management, business Ethernet and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The trial leveraged Alcatel-Lucent�s existing 7750 Service Routers, 7450 Ethernet Service Switches, and the 5620 Service Aware Manager, which together form the base of True�s converged IP/MPLS network.

�The 100GE trial will help us prepare for the future and meet the need for increasing bandwidth. As can been seen around the world, the demand is driven by trends such as wireless carriers using Ethernet backhaul to stay ahead of the rising requirement for high-bandwidth wireless services,� said Vichaow Rakphongphairoj, managing director and Group chief operating officer, Network and Technology, True Corporation PCL. �With the continuous growth of True�s fixed broadband traffic and our plan to introduce higher-speed offerings this year, it makes business sense for us to push for a single common infrastructure, allowing us to better control growing backhaul spending requirements. Sprint selects Alcatel-Lucent to drive Network Vision evolution

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has been awarded a five-year contract to help develop and deploy Sprint�s new Network Vision, a blueprint for a cost-effective, innovative network plan to further enhance voice quality and data speeds for customers across the United States.

Through Network Vision, Sprint will consolidate multiple networks into one seamless infrastructure by implementing multi-mode technology to enhance service � coverage, quality and speed � create network flexibility, reduce operating costs and improve environmental sustainability. Alcatel-Lucent was one of three vendors chosen for the Network Vision project. Sprint expects that the total estimated incremental cost of the Network Vision program over the deployment period is between $4 billion and $5 billion.

Sprint has selected Alcatel-Lucent to provide comprehensive turnkey network integration services, converged radio access network (RAN), IP/MPLS and packet microwave backhaul and network monitoring in markets in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic and southern California regions of the United States, including New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C./Baltimore and Los Angeles.

Stratos and Alcatel-Lucent team to enhance communications for oil and gas workers in the Gulf of Mexico

Tapping into a major opportunity to expand and enhance offshore communications for the oil and gas industry,Stratos Global and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU)are working together to boost IP connectivity between oil rigs, platforms and offshore vessels in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Bringing IP/MPLS to the Stratos backbone network will be the first deployment of its kind in the GoM.

Stratos is the leading global provider of advanced mobile and fixed-site remote communications solutions and the owner of the largest and most reliable digital microwave backbone in the GoM. Alcatel-Lucent is a leading global provider offixed, mobile and converged broadband networking, IP technologies, applications and services. The two companies have signed a two-year agreement worth $5.2 million to enhance and increase IP communications for offshore oil and gas workers.

The recently launched StratosMAX II broadband service network is powered by Alcatel-Lucent�s packet microwave and IP/MPLS technology to provide last-mile radio connections between remote locations in the GoM and back to shore. The high-bandwidth, low-latency experience offered by StatosMAX II gives remote workers access to reliable voice service, corporate VPNs, high-speed Internet connectivity, Stratos Hot Spot WiFi service and a wide range of mobile communications applications essential for efficient and safe operations in the GoM region.

Stratos is deploying Alcatel-Lucent�s:

9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR), managed by the 5620 Service Aware Manager, for a single service aware solution that allows Stratos to optimize service delivery in any condition as air bandwidth is fully exploited for maximum utilization of the radio band and service reliability.
7750 Service Router, 7705 SAR-8 and 5620 Service Aware Manager for a single converged IP network allowing Stratos to offer new IP services in a harsh environment with enhanced quality of service and end-to-end common operations and service management. The IP solution also has the capability to deliver seamless services across fiber and microwave technologies
Professional services, including project management;
WiMAX gear provided by Alcatel-Lucent under a reseller agreement with Ruggedcom. The integration of the Ruggedcom offering expands the access footprint for customers in the GoM to operate off Stratos� industry-leading, digital microwave backbone.

Verizon Wireless and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced a four-year agreement expected to be worth US$4 billion for Alcatel-Lucent wireless network architecture and services to support Verizon Wireless’ ongoing 3G network expansion and 4G/LTE network build out. Alcatel-Lucent continues to be a major Verizon Wireless’ network infrastructure supplier and the agreement builds on a long-standing relationship between the two companies.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has received the Broadband InfoVision Award in the �Broadband Innovation of the Year� category for i ts DSL Phantom Mode breakthrough. Building on VDSL2 Bonding, Vectoring and the analogue �phantom mode� concept, Alcatel-Lucent�s research arm Bell Labs has successfully demonstrated how this technology boosts transmission speeds attainable over traditional copper wires.

Leveraging DSL Phantom Mode, Alcatel-Lucent has shown downstream speeds of 390 Mbps over distances up to 400 meters using two copper pairs, commonly available in residential deployments. By adding more pairs, even higher speeds can be obtained (for instance, 910 Mbps at 400 meters using four pairs � which means more than 1Gbps upstream and downstream combined). The availability of more than two copper pairs is particularly relevant in business services environments, and to support mobile backhaul.

DSL Phantom Mode adds a whole new dimension to the ongoing �100Mbps for all� debate, effectively bridging the gap until nationwide fiber-to-the-home deployments have been completed. It offers service providers the perspective of enabling their existing copper infrastructure – widely deployed around the world – to satisfy demand for bandwidth-intense residential triple-play and business services, for years to come.

Wim De Meyer, VP Business Transformation at Belgacom, who attended the Broadband InfoVision Award ceremony, added: �I congratulate Alcatel-Lucent with this Broadband Innovation of the Year award – a clear recognition for the innovation Alcatel-Lucent is continuing to integrate in their products. Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) created the High Leverage Network� architecture to enable service providers to boost revenues while increasing capacity and reducing costs. Announced today, the latest release of Alcatel-Lucent�s Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) further extends this architecture and its benefits to the access network, enhancing the function of the largest installed base of IP access nodes in the world.

The new capabilities built into the ETSI-based 7302 ISAM and 7330 ISAM FTTN access nodes will address three emerging needs key to delivering the next generation of services.

The need to make use of the installed copper base in mass fiber deployments

The new, high-capacity GPON and point-to-point fiber capabilities on the 7302 and 7330 ISAM platforms allow service providers to offer a mix of access technologies, using fiber and copper, through the same node. This takes up less space, consumes less energy and demands less training and software validation � so providers can offer higher bandwidth to end users at a lower operational cost.

The need for open networks

The latest release of the ISAM platform supports multiple providers offering multiple forms of content on a single network. Network owners can increase the return on their investment by opening up to more services, service providers can extend into new areas, and end users get a wider range of choices for subscription content – generating value all the way down the chain.

The need for an intelligent access network

The new ISAM platform release introduces the industry�s first application enablement processor. Using the processor and its storage capacity, service providers can cache and replicate content at the node, reducing the demand for bandwidth across the network. Personalized content can be stored and assigned from the node, opening new routes to enrich the end user experience and create value. In the future, an intelligent access network could send different, tailored advertising to two adjacent homes watching the same TV broadcast, for example.

�By adding GPON capabilities to our 7302 ISAM and 7330 ISAM FTTN platforms, we are helping our customers to launch their next-generation fiber projects from a solid, familiar and installed base,� said Dave Geary, head of Alcatel-Lucent�s Wireline activities. �This is also the first access node to comply fully with FSAN�s GPON interoperability guidelines. completing a data call using a Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband network operating at Band 14

, the spectrum earmarked for public safety agencies in the United States. The call demonstrates the readiness of the network to support current public safety applications used by police, fire and emergency medical services as well as new applications enabled by wireless broadband.

Wireless broadband is essential for addressing mission-critical needs requiring high data throughput for applications such as video surveillance, automated vehicle license plate recognition, biometric identification, mobile crime scene units and mobile incident command, geospatial information systems, automated vehicle location and more. LTE helps increase the speed and precision of the decision-making process for first responders, shaving off seconds and minutes in their response to life-threatening situations.

OpenPlug Acquired by Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has acquired the mobile software and applications development tools vendor OpenPlug. By acquiring OpenPlug, ALU deepens its role in the applications space by delivering, as part of its integrated suite of developer tools, a platform where application developers can write an application once, which will then be translated to run on any of the five major mobile operating systems. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Alcatel-Lucent can now extend OpenPlug�s functionality to service providers, enterprises and developers so they can create and deploy applications — in virtually record time and without sacrificing the unique customer experience — across multiple mobile devices and within service provider app stores. As a result, applications that had previously only been available on more sophisticated devices such as smartphones, can now be enjoyed by consumers on any mobile device, which opens up opportunities in emerging markets, where low cost mobile phone circulation is highest.

This is the second acquisition Alcatel-Lucent has made over the past three months to expand and enhance the application ecosystem. In June, the company acquired ProgrammableWeb, the technology industry�s go-to source of API-related content.

“While demand for mobile apps is peaking, so is the fragmentation of mobile development platforms and tools,� said Michael Cote, analyst for Redmonk. �This makes it very expensive to target all devices and can lead to putting all your eggs in one, often tightly controlled basket, like Apple’s, or doing a least-common denominator, mobile web app that can’t benefit from full native device access. A tool that can target all platforms is hugely needed in this space, and OpenPlug should work well with the total mobile app development portfolio Alcatel-Lucent is putting together.”

Thanks to OpenPlug, service providers, enterprises and developers do not have to be selective about which of the many mobile platforms they will write applications for, thus limiting their potential for service adoption and revenue potential. OpenPlug�s mobile software turns every device into a smart device. It allows developers to write applications once and convert application code into native software that runs on any leading mobile device operating system, including iPhone�, Android�, Symbian�, Windows Mobile�, and Linux�.

�Being able to provide more applications across multiple devices helps service providers significantly broaden their app store content to create more value for consumers,� said Laura Merling, vice president of Alcatel-Lucent�s global developer strategy. �As service providers typically offer multiple mobile devices to their subscriber base, the OpenPlug software can help them get to market five times faster by allowing them to easily port an application to all of their devices. And this isn�t purely a mobile play — the software can be extended to support application development for IPTV set top boxes, game consoles, even the ng Connect LTE Connected Car.�

�Deploying valuable web and mobile services requires assembling many different pieces from many horizons,� said Eric Baissus, CEO of OpenPlug. �By combining OpenPlug�s ELIPS Suite and ELIPS Studio technologies with Alcatel-Lucent�s platforms and API services, we enable developers and service providers to gather all these pieces in a very efficient and consistent way. Alcatel-Lucent remains the leader in the CDMA space according to Dell�Oro�s latest Mobility Infrastructure report. Not only does Dell�Oro place Alcatel-Lucent as the historical leader in CDMA (leading in CDMA revenues since 3Q�01), the industry analyst firm also acknowledges that Alcatel-Lucent has reinforced its number one position on a quarterly basis, growing its market share – as measured by revenue – to more than 40% in 2Q�10.

CDMA remains a dynamic market with more than 500 million subscribers worldwide, and experiencing strong subscriber and traffic growth. Alcatel-Lucent continues to see CDMA as a longer-term, viable solution in established and emerging markets. CDMA remains a critical long-term asset, even as operators are starting to introduce wireless 4G technologies, due to CDMA�s extended coverage and roaming support, as well as its ability to deliver high-speed data, combined with low-cost and high-capacity voice.

Dell�Oro Group�s Scott Siegler confirms this trend, highlighting in a recent report that, over the last couple of quarters, the availability of more capable 3G CDMA devices has resulted in CDMA operators experiencing a large surge in the data traffic on their networks. He expects this data growth to continue, leading to renewed investments in modernizing older CDMA equipment and upgrading the capacity of service providers� footprint.

With the tremendous global uptake in 3G services, Alcatel-Lucent is in a unique position with its Converged RAN platform to refresh older CDMA technology with more eco-sustainable, higher-capacity options, enabling customers to move to all-IP today, and prepare their networks for evolution to LTE when the time is right.

Verizon completes industry-leading 100G Ethernet field trial

Continuing to lead the industry in 100G technology, Verizon has completed a field trial carrying 100 gigabit-per-second Ethernet traffic on a metropolitan Ethernet infrastructure. Using Alcatel-Lucent equipment deployed in Verizon�s Switched Ethernet Services network, the trial successfully transmitted data over 12.7 kilometers (7.9 miles) of field fiber in the company�s Dallas area network.

Verizon SES is a next-generation switched Ethernet service enabling customers to easily interconnect their locations within a metrowide network as well as access private and public wide area networks (WANs) using optical fiber-based access. Ethernet service is well-suited for numerous customer applications, based on its ability to provide point-to-point and multipoint connectivity options combined with multiple classes of service and increments of bandwidths.

Demand for SES is increasing, driven by trends such as wireless carriers using Ethernet backhaul to stay ahead of the growing demand for high-bandwidth wireless services. Verizon currently provides links for thousands of cell sites and mobile switching offices from its advanced fiber-optic network, using Ethernet-based technology.

�With this 100G Ethernet trial, Verizon is preparing for the future and the need to meet our customers� bandwidth needs in the metro Ethernet space,� said Jean McManus, executive director of technology for Verizon. �The �network of tomorrow� will include building blocks such as 100G Ethernet that allow us to scale our switched Ethernet core as access speeds and customer demands increase.�

The trial, which ran from June 14 � 18, used existing Alcatel-Lucent 7450 switching equipment with new plug-in cards to place native 100GE traffic on a single fiber, creating the high-speed links.

�Our goal is to show 100GE can be carried on a metro network and do it with current equipment that avoids major changes – and the associated costs – to the existing network infrastructure,� said McManus.

Alcatel-Lucent�s 7450 ESS nodes used 100 GE service interfaces with 100GBASE-LR10 optics, which provide low-cost, high-bandwidth transport over distances of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Verizon is at the forefront of accelerating the availability and adoption of 100GE technology.

In each of the past four years, Verizon has received top awards, including external link �International Service Provider of the Year� and �Service Provider of the Year � Best in Business�, from the Metro Ethernet Forum on the strength of the company’s comprehensive and robust Ethernet portfolio, extensive geographic coverage and industry innovation.

Verizon�s SES network supports Ethernet LAN (E-LAN) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) metro services. E-LAN is a multipoint-to-multipoint bridging service designed for any-to-any connectivity between dedicated ports. EVPL is an all-fiber optic network service that connects subscriber locations at native LAN speeds using point-to-point Ethernet virtual connections.

This latest trial follows external link Verizon�s deployment of the first live 100G commercial system on its European optical core network between Paris and Frankfurt as well as a series of successful 100G technology trials the company has previously completed.

In November 2007 external link Verizon and Alcatel-Lucent successfully completed the industry�s first field test of 100G optical transmission on a live network route between Tampa, Fla., and Miami. In October 2008, external link Verizon and Nortel proved 100G transmission could perform with better tolerance for signal distortion than typically found in today�s standard 10G wavelength. In September 2008, external link Verizon and Nokia Siemens Networks announced they had successfully transmitted data at 100G on a single wavelength for more than 1,040 kilometers, setting a new distance record over deployed fiber and demonstrating better performance than conventional transmission.

Alcatel-Lucent 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) issued its 2009 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, which gives an update on the company�s actions to operate as a responsible and involved corporate citizen.� The report provides details on a broad range of activities including:

Initiating the formation of the industry-wide GreenTouch� consortium and launching the Alcatel-Lucent Alternative Energy Lab,
Enhancing assessment of suppliers in its supply chain to ensure eco-sustainable and ethical behavior throughout,
Employee volunteer programs, and
Creating a workplace that values diversity and provides growth opportunities for the company�s 78,000 employees around the world.

In his introduction to the report, Alcatel-Lucent CEO Ben Verwaayen stressed how central CSR is to the company�s culture and way of doing business.� He stated that the company�s ambition in regards to CSR is to be, �best in class � nothing less, a leader in our industry across the broad range of CSR issues.� Our technology is an enabler so we feel a particular obligation to be an engaged, active corporate citizen of the global community.�

In 2009, the company launched its CSR Council with Alcatel-Lucent CEO Ben Verwaayen as its chairman, to promote dialogue with external stakeholders and to get their input and guidance on the steps the company needs to take to achieve its goal of becoming best in class in terms of its CSR efforts and results.� The Council comprises six of Alcatel-Lucent�s senior leaders and two outside experts: Claude Fussler, Special Advisor to the United Nations Global Compact, and Eric Olson, Senior Vice President, Advisory Services, Business for Social Responsibility.� The Council sets the company�s CSR goals, tracks programs and advices management on issues and opportunities.� It also advises the company�s management committee on emerging CSR trends.

The industry-wide GreenTouch^TM consortium was launched in early 2010, with much of the work for the initiative taking place in 2009, including the Bell Labs research that found communications networks could be dramatically more energy efficient than they are today.� This consortium, which now has 16 members, is committed to making global communications networks 1,000 times more energy efficient than they are today.� While this effort focuses on reducing the industry’s own carbon footprint, the urgency for this effort is made all the more significant given that communications technology is an enabler for other industries that are also seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.� Consequently, there will be an even greater dependence on networks going forward that will result in an even higher level of energy consumption unless a dramatic redesign of these networks is undertaken that emphasizes energy efficiency.

The company is mobilizing its entire workforce to reduce the company�s global carbon footprint and is working on several fronts to develop more eco-sustainable networks and operations, and that effort is showing results.� Alcatel-Lucent reduced its facility-based CO₂ emissions by nearly 112,000 tons from 2007 to 2009, thereby exceeding its goal of reducing annual CO₂ emissions by 10 percent from their 2007 level by the end of 2010, and providing more momentum for its ultimate goal of reducing its carbon footprint from all sources by 50 percent by 2020. �It has a robust program to take back, remanufacture and reuse network equipment, and in 2009 handled some 636 metric tons of equipment through that program.� In June, the company launched the world�s first alternative energy lab and pilot site dedicated to telecommunications in Villarceaux, France.� The company�s Alternative Energy program was honored with France�s Digital Green Growth prize in 2009, and in March of this year received the European Commission�s Sustainable Energy Europe Award 2010, in the �Market Transformation-Voluntary Commitments� category.

Some of the other areas covered in the report are:

Engagement with key global stakeholders, including the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Global Compact, the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions and the International Telecommunications Union Focus Group on ICT and Climate change.
Infusing sustainability and ethical practices throughout the company�s supply chain.� Alcatel-Lucent conducts on-site audits of suppliers to review the full range of CSR practices, including how employees are treated, safety practices, social and ethical policies as well as environmental issues.� Alcatel-Lucent also engaged EcoVadis, a company that specializes in sustainable supply management solutions, to implement a rating system to help us better assess suppliers in this area and help them improve their practices.� Nearly 80 percent of the assessments were rated satisfactory.
Supporting communities through the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation, which spearheads the company�s charitable activities.� Foundation grants focus on education programs, especially for girls and women.� In 2009, some 21,000 students around the world received help through 35 Foundation-funded projects, and employees donated some 50,000 hours of their time to 225 �International Days of Caring� projects, ranging from park clean up days to comprehensive mentoring programs for students, in more than 40 countries.

As it did last year, the company is publishing this report on line, as one of the tactics it is employing to minimize its carbon emissions.�� The report is available in three, digital, eco-friendly formats: 2009 CSR Report In Brief version (in English only):
