Comcast has deployed the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR 9000) as part of its next-generation network that is delivering advanced business services in more than 20 major U.S. markets, with expansion into new markets planned in the months ahead.

Comcast is working with Cisco on this deployment based on Cisco’s technology, services, and experience helping network operators scale services to meet business customer demands. Designed to deliver massive scale and accommodate the projected explosion in global Internet traffic, Cisco’s ASR 9000 provides Comcast with a converged infrastructure that optimizes service delivery through its flexibility, wide array of features and its emphasis on Carrier Ethernet.

Cisco today announced a new green data center in Allen, Texas, with an architecture deploying Cisco’s entire data center technology portfolio spanning computing, switching, and data storage access to support Cisco’s internal private cloud and deliver Information Technology (IT) as a service. The new data center demonstrates the value of a network-based approach through improved resilience, performance and use of resources, while delivering IT services such as video, mobility, security, and collaboration to Cisco employees, customers, partners, and other constituents.

The Cloud Makes Data Centers Greener

While energy-efficient buildings and smarter power and cooling solutions contribute to greener data centers, the technology that runs the data center can also make a huge contribution.� For example, a Unified Fabric in the data center unites storage and data traffic, reducing the number of switches, adapters and cabling required, and therefore the power usage.� Cisco saved more than $1 million on cabling in this facility, and fewer cables translate to increased air circulation so the equipment runs cooler and more efficiently.� Cloud computing is forecast to cut worldwide data center energy usage by 38 percent in 2020, according to “cleantech” analysts at Pike Research. This could also cut greenhouse gases by 28 percent in 2020 compared to 2010.

Cisco has completed its acquisition of privately-held newScale Inc., a provider of software that delivers a service catalog and self-service portal for IT organizations to select and quickly deploy cloud services within their businesses. Based in San Mateo, Calif., newScale allows commercial and enterprise customers to initiate the provisioning of their own systems and infrastructure on an as-needed basis.

Cisco’s cloud strategy is to harness the network as a platform for building and using clouds and cloud services.� newScale complements and expands existing Cisco and partner software offerings in IT and cloud management and automation. Cisco remains committed to supporting flexibility and choice in management through a broad ecosystem of technology partners, and newScale delivers an additional option the company can provide to its customers.

Financial terms of the transaction are undisclosed. With the close of the acquisition, the newScale team reports into Cisco’s Advanced Services organization.

As part of Cisco’s plan to align its operations, it will exit aspects of its consumer businesses and realign the remaining consumer business to support four of its five key company priorities � core routing, switching and services; collaboration; architectures; and video. As part of its plan, Cisco will:

• Close down its Flip business and support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan.
• Refocus Cisco’s Home Networking business for greater profitability and connection to the company’s core networking infrastructure as the network expands into a video platform in the home. These industry-leading products will continue to be available through retail channels.
• Integrate Cisco umi into the company’s Business TelePresence product line and operate through an enterprise and service provider go-to-market model, consistent with existing business TelePresence efforts.
• Assess core video technology integration of Cisco’s Eos media solutions business or other market opportunities for this business.

“We are making key, targeted moves as we align operations in support of our network-centric platform strategy,” said John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO. “As we move forward, our consumer efforts will focus on how we help our enterprise and service provider customers optimize and expand their offerings for consumers, and help ensure the network’s ability to deliver on those offerings.”

In connection with the changes to the consumer business, it is anticipated that Cisco will recognize restructuring charges to its GAAP financial results, with an aggregate pre-tax impact not expected to exceed $300 million during the third and fourth quarters of fiscal 2011. The charges will be disclosed in upcoming earnings conference calls and quarterly Form 10-Q filings.� Additionally, the company expects this will result in a reduction of approximately 550 employees in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011.

Cisco today announced that on March 17, 2011, its Board of Directors approved the initiation of quarterly cash dividends to its shareholders.

This is the first cash dividend paid to shareholders in the company’s history. A quarterly dividend of $0.06 per common share will be paid on April 20, 2011, to all shareholders of record as of the close of business on March 31, 2011. Future dividends will be subject to Board approval.

Cisco has completed its acquisition of privately-held Inlet Technologies, a leading provider of Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) digital media processing platforms. Based in Raleigh, N.C., Inlet strengthens the capabilities of Cisco’s Videoscape TV platform, allowing service and content providers to deliver compelling video experiences to any device over any Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Cisco Videoscape is a comprehensive TV platform for service providers that brings together digital TV and online content with social media and communications applications to create a truly immersive home and mobile video entertainment experience. In a major cybercrime turning point, scammers have begun shifting their focus away from Windows-based PCs to other operating systems and platforms, including smart phones, tablet computers, and mobile platforms in general, according to the Cisco� 2010 Annual Security Report, released today. The report also finds that 2010 was the first year in the history of the Internet that spam volume decreased, that cybercriminals are investing heavily in “money muling,” and that users continue to fall prey to myriad forms of trust exploitation.

In response to the last decade of cyber-exploits targeting PC operating systems, PC platform and application vendors have shored up security in their products and taken a more aggressive approach to patching vulnerabilities. As a result, scammers are finding it harder to exploit platforms that were once their bread and butter � in particular, the Windows platform � and are looking elsewhere to make money. Just as important in driving this trend is the widespread adoption of mobile devices and applications. Third-party mobile applications in particular are emerging as a serious threat vector.

The Cisco Annual Security Report also includes winners of the 2010 Cisco Cybercrime Showcase and discusses the impacts of social media, cloud computing, spam and global cybercrime activities on network security.

Spam

2010 marks the first year of declining spam volume in the history of the Internet. Despite this good news, 2010 saw an uptick in spam in developed economies where broadband connections are spreading, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom, for example, spam volume rose almost 99 percent from 2009 to 2010. The good news is that Brazil, China and Turkey � all of which figured high on last year’s list of spammed nations � showed significantly lower volumes in 2010. In particular, Turkey’s spam volume dropped 87 percent. This reduction is due in part to the high-profile takedowns of botnets like Waledac and Pushdo/Cutwail, attributed largely to researcher Thorsten Holz (see the Cisco Cybercrime Showcase) and ISPs restricting malicious e-mail from broadband networks. In addition, authorities are taking the spam problem more seriously and are looking to take down egregious offenders.

Money Muling:

As the cybercriminal economy expands and criminals gain access to even more financial credentials, there is a growing need for money mules � people recruited to set up bank accounts, or even use their own bank accounts, to help scammers “cash out” or launder money. Money muling operations are becoming more elaborate and international in scope, and Cisco security experts anticipate they will be a major focus of cybercriminal investment in 2011.

Trust Exploitation

Most cybercrime exploits hinge not only on technology but also on the all-too-human tendency to misplace trust. The Cisco Annual Security Report lists seven “deadly weaknesses” that cybercriminals exploit through social engineering scams � whether in the form of e-mails, social networking chats or phone calls. The seven weaknesses are sex appeal, greed, vanity, trust, sloth, compassion and urgency.

Cisco Global ARMS Race Index

Cisco’s Global Adversary Resource Market Share (ARMS) Race Index was designed to track the overall level of compromised resources worldwide and, over time, to provide a better picture of the online criminal community’s rate of success at compromising enterprise and individual users. According to data collected for the 10-point index, the level of resources under adversarial control worldwide at the end of 2010 was down almost a half a point from the December 2009 level of 7.2 reported in the Cisco 2009 Annual Security Report.
The second annual Cisco Cybercrime Showcase presents two awards for 2010 � one acknowledging the outstanding contributions of a security professional in the fight against cybercrime (the “Good,” Thorsten Holz, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany/LastLine), the other the most threatening malware (the “Evil,” Stuxnet).

The Cisco CROI Matrix, which made its debut in the Cisco 2009 Annual Security Report, analyzes types of cybercrime that Cisco’s security experts predict profit-oriented scammers will channel their resources toward in 2011. Based on performance in 2010, the matrix predicts that the data-theft Trojans such as Zeus, easy-to-deploy Web exploits, and money mules will continue to rise in prevalence in 2011. The “wait and see” moneymakers include mobile malware, with Zeus already being adapted for the mobile platform in the form of SymbOS/Zitmo.Altr (“Zitmo” stands for “Zeus in the Mobile”). Social networking scams, on the other hand, will not be a significant area for cybercriminals to invest resources in 2011, despite ranking in last year’s report in the Potentials category. That does not mean that social networking scams are declining; they are simply a small part of a bigger plan � launching Web exploits like the Zeus Trojan.

The results of a new research study, conducted by and issued today by Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG), investigates the “public cloud” and the desire of enterprises to use external, on-demand infrastructure and applications. The study reveals that service providers have an opportunity to differentiate themselves and add new revenue-generating services by providing public cloud-computing services.

Cisco IBSG, the company’s global consultancy, recently conducted in-depth, one-on-one interviews with more than 80 enterprise information technology (IT) decision makers from 43 enterprises and public-sector organizations in the United States, the European Union, and India. Additionally, Cisco IBSG interviewed 20 subject-matter experts.

Based on feedback from the survey, Cisco IBSG estimates that nearly 12 percent of enterprise workloads will run in the public cloud by the end of 2013. Furthermore, the study found that desktop applications, email, collaboration, and enterprise resources planning are most likely to shift to the cloud. This, in turn, will yield a market for public, cloud-computing services of approximately US$44 billion.

The study identified a set of target applications for cloud that spans various verticals. Targets for infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) include application development and testing, disaster recovery, simulations, data warehousing, and analysis. Targets for software-as-a-service (SaaS) are customer-relationship management (CRM), email, unified communications, web applications and desktop environments.

Cloud-migration decisions are being made at the application level. Most decision makers envision a staged migration to cloud-computing services, beginning with noncritical applications. Enterprise executives believe that no applications should be automatically excluded from migration to cloud.

Enterprises across many sectors�including manufacturing, financial services, retail, healthcare, and professional services systems integrators, IT service outsourcers, technical consulting, and public sector organizations�are seriously considering cloud computing.

Cisco today announced the results of the latest Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) testing, marking the first-ever software upgrade of an Internet Protocol (IP) router aboard a commercial satellite while in orbit. In addition, Cisco completed the industry’s first Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call made without the use of any terrestrial infrastructure to route the call.

This achievement represents a radical departure from current communications satellite technology, which relies on ground-based hubs to convey voice and video signals between satellites and end users. Benefits of this new capability include the ability to route voice, data and video traffic between users over a single IP network more efficiently, and with greater cost effectiveness, than is currently possible over today’s fragmented satellite communications networks. In addition, the capability to upgrade the software of the Cisco router and onboard modem from the ground increases the flexibility of the system to implement future capabilities and the lifespan of the communications system.

Demonstration Facts:

• IRIS is part of Cisco’s initiative to transform satellite networks. The initiative includes the Cisco 18400 Space Router, a radiation-tolerant IP router for satellite and related spacecraft. The first space router was launched on-board Intelsat 14, a geostationary communications satellite.
• Cisco recently teamed up with Astrium to study the applications of space-based routers. In October, Cisco and Astrium successfully demonstrated IRIS services such as multicasting, which enables the delivery of information to a group of destination computers simultaneously in a single transmission.
• Cisco updated the IOS� Software in the router aboard Intelsat 14 to enable a variety of capabilities for enhanced management that are already available for Cisco’s terrestrial products including Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express, IPv6, Mobile IP and SNMPv3 MIBs (Simple Network Management Protocol version 3 Management Information Bases). It also enables additional security features, including hardware-based encryption.
• The demonstration was the first use of Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express to make a VoIP phone call via a router in space.

About IRIS

• IRIS offers several enhancements over conventional satellite technology. With IRIS, users will be able to experience a true mobile network that continuously adapts without reliance on a predefined, fixed infrastructure.
• The elimination of the double-hop, combined with the bandwidth-on-demand feature and the shorter radio frequency path with IRIS, also increases transponder utilization. The software on the Cisco 18400 Space Router and on-board modem can be upgraded in orbit, which increases flexibility and return on investment. IRIS runs Cisco IOS Software, taking advantage of billions of dollars in Cisco IOS research and development and integrating with Cisco ground routers to create a converged, multiservice space and ground network.
• IRIS extends the Internet into space, as it can directly exchange routing updates with Cisco ground routers, which increases the flexibility of the satellite network.
• The Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express software on-board the Cisco router in the satellite can also provide backup call control capability to terrestrial infrastructure.
• Cisco is working with satellite manufacturers, system integrators and end users to help enable them to deliver services globally to points outside traditional ground-based networks.

Overview

Cisco today announced its intent to acquire privately held Arch Rock Corporation, a pioneer in Internet Protocol-based wireless network technology for smart-grid applications. Based in San Francisco, Arch Rock will accelerate Cisco’s ability to facilitate the utility industry’s transition to an open and interoperable smart grid by enabling Cisco to offer a comprehensive and highly secure advanced metering infrastructure solution based completely on IP standards.

“The acquisition of Arch Rock enhances Cisco’s end-to-end smart-grid offerings and further positions Cisco as a strategic partner to utilities that want to better manage power supply and demand, improve the security and reliability of energy delivery, and optimize operational costs,” said Laura Ipsen, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Smart Grid business unit. “Cisco’s solutions, incorporating the Arch Rock technology, will help enable a more efficient and sustainable energy future that is based on an open, highly secure and reliable smart-grid infrastructure.”

The acquisition of Arch Rock further establishes Cisco’s vision of fully IP-enabled networking solutions for a smart grid. Arch Rock’s technology is designed to enable utilities to connect smart meters and other distributed intelligent devices over a scalable, highly secure, multi-way wireless mesh network based on IP standards. This capability complements the recently announced joint development agreement between Itron and Cisco, by which Cisco plans to develop solutions that enhance smart-metering technology, enabling utilities to meet the demands of increasingly empowered customers and highly distributed energy sources.

Arch Rock brings to Cisco a proven team that has been a leader in the research and development of wireless networking and its integration into grid solutions. Upon the close of the acquisition, the Arch Rock team will become part of Cisco’s industry-leading Smart Grid business unit. Financial terms of the transaction are undisclosed. The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions and is expected to be complete in the second half of calendar year 2010.

Cisco today announced the Cisco TelePresence Meeting solution, a revolutionary new category of products that create live, “face-to-face” meeting experiences over an Internet Protocol (IP) network empowering users to interact and collaborate in ways they could not before.

The Cisco TelePresence Meeting solution combines the reach, intelligence and reliability of the network with the simplicity of a telephone interface to deliver an entirely new way for people to meet and collaborate. Cisco announced today that its Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) technology has achieved another major milestone with the successful completion of in-orbit testing for the United States Department of Defense. The first-ever deployment of an Internet Protocol (IP) router aboard a commercial satellite, this milestone represents another step in IRIS’ viability as a next-generation resource for the military and commercial satellite communications.

Cisco IRIS Router

The IRIS router supports network services for voice, video and data communications, helping enable government agencies, military units and allied forces to communicate with one another using IP and existing ground equipment. This offers several enhancements over conventional satellite technology and eliminates the need to send data to and from an extra ground station, which can be expensive and time-consuming. IRIS was launched on Intelsat’s IS-14 satellite on Nov. 23, 2009.

Demonstration Facts:

• IRIS is a program to build a radiation-tolerant IP router for satellite and related spacecraft.
• The IRIS Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) is a Department of Defense (DoD) demonstration program managed by a Cisco-led Industry Management Team that included Intelsat General. It is the first commercially-sponsored JCTD and represents a new model for closer collaboration between government and industry.
• During the JCTD evaluation, IRIS services were tested by US DoD and global governmental users in real-world scenarios, both on land and at sea. In each instance, IRIS was able to provide on-demand connectivity and enhance the mission effectiveness of these users. The JCTD evaluation also featured real-time collaboration applications over satellite including virtual private networks and video and file transfers.

Proven outcomes of the IRIS JCTD included:

• High availability: 99.95% router availability during the IRIS JCTD provided the foundation for mission critical operations.
• Seamless, high performance global IP communications: Applications including voice over IP and video and file transfers performed equally well regardless of terminal location, demonstrating communications performance equal to traditional, land-based networks.
• Secure, flexible IP Virtual Private Networks: In support of mission and connectivity requirements that change in real-time, two discreet VPN networks were continuously maintained via the IRIS platform which ensured uninterrupted, highly secure communications.
• Enhanced, real-time operations collaboration: IRIS provided real-time chat/voice and web portal services that were quickly and easily accessible from any terminal, ensuring fast and effective coordination and communications in response to events and conditions.
• Following this JCTD completion, the IRIS payload is undergoing extended commercial and government testing for up to 12 months to demonstrate its viability for additional applications for the at-large satellite networking ecosystem.
• The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) will be offering IRIS services to its Dept. of Defense programs later in the year for additional testing in various scenarios.

Headquartered in San Jose, with the majority of its employee base in Nuremberg and Gerlingen, Germany, CoreOptics will enable Cisco to equip service provider customers with highly advanced 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) transmission technology to scale their networks to meet the demands of rapidly growing Internet Protocol traffic driven by video, mobility and cloud services.

The next phase of innovation in optical networking will be driven by sophisticated modulation formats and advanced DSP technologies. These new capabilities enable the efficient transmission of large amounts of data over existing fiber optic installations. By enabling high speeds across an existing infrastructure, Cisco and CoreOptics will address the challenge facing service providers of accommodating the growth in network traffic while managing tight capital expenditure budgets.

The acquisition of CoreOptics expands Cisco’s optical presence in Europe, builds on its existing European operations in Monza, Italy, and contributes to continued innovation in optical networking. Cisco today announced its intent to acquire privately held CoreOptics Inc., a designer of digital signal processing (DSP) solutions for high-speed optical networking applications. Based in San Jose, with the majority of its employee base in Nuremberg and Gerlingen, Germany, CoreOptics will enable Cisco to equip service provider customers with highly advanced 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) transmission technology to scale their networks to meet the demands of rapidly growing Internet Protocol traffic driven by video, mobility and cloud services. According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index research, global IP traffic will increase fivefold from 2008 to 2013 with a 40 percent compound annual growth rate.
