Qwest gets large U.S. Railroad Retirement Board order

Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q) today announced that the United States Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) has awarded the company a task order worth nearly $3.5 million to build a state-of-the-art communications network to provide a suite of digital services to interconnect the agency’s nearly 60 offices across the country.

Under the terms of the order, Qwest will transform the RRB’s frame relay network to a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-enabled network with a full portfolio of services offered under Qwest’s Network Universal contract. Networx Universal is a program by the General Services Administration (GSA) that provides comprehensive communications and networking services and technical solutions to all federal agencies.

“Qwest is looking forward to beginning our new partnership with the United States Railroad Retirement Board,” said Diana Gowen, senior vice president and general manager of Qwest Government Services. “The advanced communications network Qwest is providing will deliver many benefits to the RRB, including a contact center for processing claims and payments for railroad personnel and their families.”

The Qwest team includes experienced technology solution providers to transform existing customer service platforms to the advanced fully-converged MPLS Qwest products.

The RRB task order has a time frame of three years and is the first order Qwest has received under Networx Universal. Qwest has a legacy of providing advanced and secure communications services to the federal government and currently serves nearly 50 civilian, military and intelligence agencies.

Qwest also announced that it expects to successfully complete operating systems and support (OSS) testing for the Networx Enterprise contract by mid-October, continuing its series of aggressive execution steps begun on Networx Universal. After the testing is complete, the GSA is expected to grant “Authorization to Operate,” allowing Qwest to begin taking orders on Enterprise.

Qwest’s Networx Enterprise offers a core set of Internet Protocol (IP) offerings to a more specific geographic profile compared to the more expansive requirements under Universal for continuity and full service coverage. Together, the two Networx programs have a spending ceiling that is valued at $68 billion over the next 10 years.
