Mitel®, the trusted provider of IP communication solutions and applications, today announced that it has been selected as the strategic IP communications partner for Carleton University. The campus-wide deployment of Mitel Unified Communications over a multi-year migration, could encompass over 7,000 lines, 4,000 handsets, unified messaging and other productivity-enhancing applications.
The competitive bid called for the replacement of existing multi-vendor telephony systems, the expansion of the network and the introduction of multiple applications. Implementation of the converged communications system has begun. The scalable network will assist Carleton to meet the growth of voice communications needs as the university continues to grow.

The resilient Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP) operates over the campus 10 gigabit-per-second Ethernet network provided by Hewlett-Packard® and Cisco® routers ensuring high-performance connectivity to more than 20 buildings, 2,000 faculty and staff, and 23,000 students located on the university’s 62-hectare campus.
The university could also benefit from mobility applications including:
- Mitel NuPoint Messenger™ IP Model 640 – enabling users to forward, store and retrieve voice, fax and email messages using the device of their choice
- Mitel Your Assistant™ and Mitel Your Assistant™ Softphone – a PC-based desktop application that provides a single access point to all of the university’s requirements – audio, video, and data for in-the-moment communications and collaboration
- NetLink Wireless Telephones that leverage the university’s Wi-Fi infrastructure to “twin” a user’s desk phone to allow incoming calls to ring at the wireless telephone as well as the desk phone
